Plan the Ultimate Bohemian Wedding

Beautiful-bride-on-a-background-of-summer-forest-000068142957_Medium

If you’re a bohemian bride, you probably don’t care much for mundane details. What type of tuxedo should your groom wear? Pass. How many tables should you rent? Snooze. What color do you want the linens? Wait, there are linens?

Yup, there are linens. But don’t worry, some aspects of the ceremony/reception are actually fun to plan! Read on for 10 easy ways to create your own boho-style wedding bash.

book an outdoor venue

Have you always dreamed of a wedding on the beach? Maybe your wish is to say I do in a secluded forest, or exchange vows beneath a sprawling oak tree in a meadow. Keep the size of your wedding and preferred style of gown in mind when choosing a place. Plan ahead for the weather!

stars-above-the-mountains-with-tent-highlighted-000073912653_Medium

choose a theme

Your theme ties everything together. You can use coordinating colors as a generic wedding theme (the traditional choice), or you can go with something more personalized. Great boho-friendly styles include the beach, astrology, an enchanted forest, a midsummer’s dream, or a celestial theme.

plan the party

Give your guests something fun to do! Popular activities include photo booths, drink mixing stations, yard games, or outdoor excursions. Be sure to offer multiple options, especially if you’re stretching the celebration over a weekend. Get creative and provide interesting entertainment.

Two-people-in-love-000081639665_Medium

write your own vows

It’s best to write or choose vows with deep meaning. Your relationship is unique; the words you use to make this commitment should be personal. Put thought into this and show your future spouse exactly how you feel. Reflect your heritage. Express yourself.

include crystals & natural stones

For your décor, you can choose meaningful crystals and stones to reflect your feelings. Stones make beautiful and interesting centerpieces, place cards, or even invitations! You can send guests home with their own crystals and/or gift your bridesmaids with natural stone jewelry.

Boho-bouquet-000092140463_Medium

use flowers

Flowers are a lovely finishing touch. For a boho ceremony, a cascading bouquet with wild flowers looks gorgeous. You can wear a natural floral crown, a fabric flower headband, or even a gilded halo. Floral prints for bridesmaids’ dresses are big this year! Play off the natural beauty of your surroundings.

be eco-friendly

Every wedding should be eco-friendly, don’t you think? Use local, seasonal flowers or potted plants for your décor, and shrink your ecological footprint. Send digital invitations. Ask guests to carpool. Let the flower girls scatter biodegradable confetti. Give favors that people can grow, eat, or re-use.

post quotes

Incorporate extra-special meaning into your wedding by displaying your favorite quotes from poets, novelists, philosophers, or even movies! Some couples hang banners; others print quotes onto table cards or make a custom aisle runner. Invite your guests to reflect on the nature of life and love.

create reception magic

Host your reception at a site with campfires. Roast s’mores, drink, and be merry until the sun comes up! Provide space heaters or blankets if it will be chilly; glow stick or lanterns are helpful if there won’t be much lighting outside. Watch the stars, discuss the phases of the moon, and enjoy the night.

5 Reasons to Have a Beach Wedding

Jen-Fuj-Bel-Aire-Bridal-Cathedral-Veil

Trying to decide if a beach wedding is right for you? There are wonderful reasons to host an elaborate ceremony in a cathedral or ballroom, and for saying “I do” in a blooming, flower-filled garden. But getting married on the beach has its own special charms!

In honor of summer weddings, here are 5 fabulous reasons why you should pick a coastal venue to exchange your vows.

Feel-that-hot-sand-under-your-feet-000069380655_Medium.jpg

No Shoes, No Problem

Are you a laid-back bride? Want to steer clear of stiletto heels? If you would rather go barefoot or dance in flip-flops, a beach wedding is perfect for you. This situation is ideal for a casual theme with nautical details like starfish, sand, surf, and shells.

Tropical-wedding-000016327793_Medium

Sunglasses Always Look Cool

Go on, get that photo of everyone wearing sunglasses, looking like they’re straight out of the CIA. You can ditch the formal jackets and ties, and go for an all-out summer theme! If your idea of a good time involves tropical drinks and sunblock, this is a good way to go.

Sharing-a-loving-smile-000021303983_Medium

Dare to Bare

Is your dream wedding gown free-flowing rather than structured? Does it lack straps or show a bit more skin than usual? If you’re just itching to ditch the traditional dress with a long train, the beach is your opportunity to show off a more relaxed style. Your guests can come with casual attire, too!Just-married-couple-kissing-on-tropical-beach-at-sunset-000032199840_Medium-(1).jpg

Incredible Veil Photos

Beach weddings give you amazing photos. You can get one with your veil blowing in the coastal wind, and showcase the natural ocean scenery. Rather than skipping accessories, highlight them in beautiful, beachy bridal portraits that will be anything but boring.

Romantic Getaway

If you want to honeymoon on the coast or at a tropical location, a beach wedding just makes sense. You’ll already be at or near your destination, and friends and family can stay longer than just one day! The beach is soothing, romantic, intimate, and absolutely gorgeous. What better place to kick back and start your married life?

8 Essentials for the Destination Bride

bride-and-groom-holding-hands-in-Sperlonga,-Italy-000084160067_Medium.jpg

Happy first day of summer! If you’re going away to elope or hosting a fantastic wedding weekend party, preparation is everything. Make sure you do these eight things to make your dreams come true!

Couple-in-hotel-room-getting-dressed-000054796390_Medium.jpg

Make a List

Ever go on a trip and realize you forgot something important? It’s usually something small, like a hair brush or tampons or your bathing suit—but these things can greatly impact your comfort level.

Create a list of everything you’ll need to pack for the wedding, and double-check. This is not the time to underpack or think “it’ll be fine.” This is your special day! Everything won’t be perfect, but being prepared will get it pretty close.

Beautiful-hair-of-a-bride-000069377419_Medium.jpg

Protect Your Gear

Keep your wedding gown in a garment bag at all times, and hang it away from pets or small children. Safely store your wedding day jewelry, headpiece, garter, undergarments, shoes, and veil. It’s helpful to keep these in a pocket of the garment bag—or in a separate travel box that will keep everything accounted for. Do not iron your veil. To get out wrinkles, you can lightly steam it or hang it for a few days and they will fall out.

A-bride-and-groom-enjoying-the-view-and-the-amazing-sunset-000031865728_Medium.jpg

Have Backups

Accidents happen. If you’ve seen any wedding movie ever, you’ve seen the bride tear her veil, spill wine all over her dress, lose her shoes to the dog, or drop her ring in the shower. Hopefully none of these perils befall you! But if anything does go wrong, it helps to have a backup LWD, hair clip, and pair of flats. You can wear these items on your honeymoon, and you’ll feel better knowing you won’t be walking down the aisle in jeans.

Before-the-trip-000020293584_Medium.jpg

Use a Host

Your wedding day will be a whirlwind of events. It’s difficult to live in the moment and enjoy yourself if guests are constantly asking questions, or if you have to stop and pay the photographer before they leave, or if you have to find out who is double parked. Designate someone else—be it your MOH or wedding planner—to act as the gracious host. Let them solve problems so you can relax and just enjoy being the bride!

candle-lantern-000057919154_Medium.jpg

Emergency Medical Info

Emergencies happen, even at weddings. Whether your fiancé steps on a rattlesnake or your relative falls on the dance floor, you should know who to call. Even if nothing goes wrong on the wedding day, you might require medical help on the honeymoon. Keep your information with you, bring extra medication, and let your insurance companies know that you are traveling. Make sure you are covered abroad.

white-wooden-background-with-shells,-love-letters-and-heart-shape-000076745031_Medium.jpg

Vendors Who Can Be There

Many popular destination wedding spots will suggest (or require) vendors they work with on a regular basis. Make sure you are comfortable with these businesses and plan the details with them ahead of time. Get their contact information. If someone isn’t reliable or doesn’t understand your vision, consider working with someone else. Especially when you’re far from home, it helps to have vendors you can trust to be there.

beautiful--gorgeous-blonde-bride--and-stylish-groom-on-rocks,-on-000089964755_Medium.jpg

Do Paperwork in Advance

Do you both have updated passports? Have you changed your name(s)? Have you purchased a license and hired someone who can perform your wedding? A lot of rules apply to marriage ceremonies, so make sure the two of you can travel and get married in your chosen destination. There may be residency requirements or additional fees. Be prepared so you don’t have to sign at the court house later.

lovers-in-a-wedding-dress-near-the-sea-and-mountains-000091838349_Medium.jpg

Pick a Style

Destination weddings are fun because they can be so much more intimate and carefree than a traditional wedding ceremony. Smaller weddings are easier to style, too! Transform your bridal look with a destination style—whether it’s glamorous, trendy, romantic, vintage-inspired, or beachy. Choosing a theme will help make your wedding feel just a bit more special and make it stand out from the rest of the celebratory weekend.

How To Get Hitched, Rustic Style

Happy-Bride-in-Wedding-Dress-and-Cowboy-Boots-000068887321_Large.jpg

Rustic. Glamping. Country Chic. You’ve seen these buzz words for wedding themes all over Pinterest—but how can you realistically bring your vision to life?

A lot of details go into creating a cohesive wedding theme; planning can get overwhelming in a hurry! Here are 10 easy ways to style your very own rustic wedding with minimal effort.

Signs-to-a-wedding-000065601493_Large.jpg

Wooden Signs

Wooden signs are easy to make and can be used to label food and drinks, direct wedding guests to different areas, preclude the bride’s walk down the aisle, or post a favorite Bible verse or romantic quote. You can hang signs to posts, use them in centerpieces, or just hold them for photos.

White-Dahlia-Wedding-000060487198_Large.jpg

Mason Jars

Cheap and available, mason jar centerpieces are great for holding flowers, candles, or favors. You can wrap them in burlap or lace and secure the decorations with glue or string. This is a relatively easy project that you can do in a few days.

Case-with-wedding-accessorize-000076075953_Medium-(1).jpg

Burlap & Lace

No rustic theme is complete without burlap. Inexpensive and easily obtainable, burlap and lace can be used for chair covers, table cloths, seat covers, aisle runners, bouquets, centerpieces, and even your invitations. Get creative!

Wedding-decorations-000083754605_Medium.jpg

Rustic Invitations

Your invitations will set the stage for the rest of your wedding. Your website and save-the-dates should also reflect your theme: add details like burlap, lace, twine, fireflies, mason jars, leaves, or lanterns. Pick invites in neutral tones if you haven’t decided on your wedding colors yet.

Wedding-still-life-in-rustic-style.jpg

Lanterns

Lighting is what creates an extra-special, romantic ambiance. For a rustic theme, lanterns or mason jars with candles beautifully light up walkways and table tops. You can also string lights inside your venue or from poles/trees to illuminate the reception area.

Interior-Design-for-a-Wedding-Reception-Area-000061198432_Large.jpg

Barn Venue

For a rustic theme, you should pretty much get married in a barn. Use the family farm or rent a wedding barn for the ceremony; you can also host a backyard wedding or choose a sprawling estate. Be sure that your venue has plenty of natural wood paneling or flooring to create that rustic look you’re going for.

Wedding-with-a-natural-twist-000029062080_Medium.jpg

Horses

If you’re a horse girl, snap a few photos with your equestrian pal to include them in your wedding day memories. You can take pictures near a pasture fence, or supervise pony rides for children in attendance. It’s a nice gesture to provide outdoor games or entertainment for your guests while you’re taking family portraits.

Bride-and-groom-standing-embracing-near-wooden-fence-on-the-000092635165_Medium

Outdoor Reception

A rustic theme is great for summer weddings, as you’ll enjoy more daylight hours and can have camp fires when it gets dark. Furnish your reception space with bales of hay or benches so guests have somewhere to sit besides the grass. Provide blankets or space heaters if it might get cold. You can set up an outdoor stage for the music and dancing. Add s’mores and a bar for a fantastic reception!

Cowboy-boots-with-flowers-000059532600_Medium.jpg

Cowboy Boots

Let’s talk about your bridal ensemble, shall we? This is totally the time to rock your favorite cowgirl boots—or, if you prefer, a pair of burlap sandals or woven flats. This simple touch adds a fun element to your wedding day look, and you won’t have to change your shoes for dancing.

27-Bel-Aire-Bridal-KLK-Photography-6536-2

Gold Accessories

The rustic-chic theme celebrates nature-inspired beauty. Complement your bridal gown with accessories to match! Choose a blush or gold flower comb or leafy metallic headpiece to go with your veil for the ceremony; then switch to a sparkly design for the reception. Check out our Fall 2016 Collection, Classic Veils, and Belts/Jewelry pages to see all of our latest designs.

Which decade is your favorite? We adored them all, so here’s the scoop on how to style your very own vintage-inspired look!Family-000077062903_Medium.jpg

1910s

At the turn of the century, modest Edwardian gowns and simple rings were in vogue. Think parasols, bustiers, stockings—the whole nine yards! Veils during this era were long and simple, often accompanied by flowered hats or floral garlands.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1910.jpg

Our Top Picks: Style this look with a vintage gown à la Downton Abbey and classic accessories like headpiece 6410, veil V7198, and bracelet BC141.

Victorian-Edwardian-People--Wedding-Couple-000006441263_Medium.jpg

1920s

This decade was all about opulence and fashion-forward sparkle. Thanks to the Gatsby movie a few years back, modern brides inspired by this jazzy era have plenty of options! Geometric designs, beautiful beading, and Art Deco lines create a fabulous ‘20s theme.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1920.jpg

Our Top Picks: Style this look with a jazzy, beaded sheath gown and sparkly accessories. Try on headpiece 6351, a clip like 6405, and a tie veil such as 6354.

1930s

Wedding-from-the-thirties-or-twenties-000002744627_Medium.jpg

Due to the economic crash of the Great Depression, this era featured much more modest wedding attire. Suit sets and blazers came into style, though intricately beaded cap veils were still popular.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1930.jpg
Our Top Picks: Petite bow clip 6607, Chantilly lace cap 6364, and bracelet BC130.

1940s

Wedding-in-1941.jpg

Much like the previous decade, dress suit sets were popular and often worn by military brides. Modest, high-necked wedding dresses and long veils were in style. Flower headpieces, pearls, and lace gowns grew in popularity.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1940.jpg

Our Top Pics: Style a look of endearing romance with pearl crown headpiece 6491, tie lace veil 6444, and pearl jewelry set J2094.

Wedding-couple-from-the-1950's-000002320629_Large.jpg

1950s

The economic upswing of the ‘50s meant more extravagant wedding attire! Stand-out examples include Jacqueline Kennedy’s beautiful off-the-shoulder bridal gown and decadent cap veil, as well as Grace Kelly’s high neck lace gown and lace trimmed veil.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1950.jpg

Our Top Picks: Style this look with a period-inspired French net veil like 6225 or a dramatic cathedral veil like V7179C. Add pearl-encrusted bracelet BC139.

1960s

Vintage-1960-Wedding-Family-Portrait-000017032181_Medium.jpg

Diverse fashions in the ‘60s offered brides everything from long lace sleeves to full-skirted princess gowns to modest going-away suits. Some brides wore hats, some wore flowers, and some went with multi-tiered veils.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1960

Our Top Picks: A dreamy veil with lots of volume like V7164, Venise lace flower clip 6533, or drop earrings EA227.

1970s

Old-Photo-Couples-000014881820_Medium.jpg

Spread the love! Bohemian looks were all the rage (and are still loved by the modern boho-chic bride). Floral lace veils, unstructured dresses with lots of layers, and flower headbands were popular.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1970.jpg

Our Top Picks: Stick a pretty flower on lace headwrap 6378, wear a lovely lace-trimmed veil like V7322, or try on a sparkling vine headband like 6647.

1980svintage-photo6-000000275885_Medium.jpg

The poufy sleeves, crazy colors, and big volume of the 1980s left a lasting impression. Over-the-top veils and voluminous gowns with long trains became popular after Princess Diana’s 1981 wedding. Opulent ceremonies with lots of lace and floral accents became the big thing.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1980.jpg

Our Top Picks: Re-create a retro look with an eye-catching headpiece like 6324, a dramatic cathedral veil like V7196C, and bling-worthy jewelry like BC102.

1990s

Elelgant-Wedding-Portrait-Handsome-Bride-and-Groom-Together-Outdoors-000021169712_Medium

Sleek and slim became popular in the ‘90s, with satin gowns, spaghetti straps, and simple silhouettes taking over. Crisp updos and minimal makeup were preferred to create an elegant, refined look. Brides began to incorporate colored sashes or ombré gowns.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1990.jpg

Our Top Picks: A princess tiara like 6304, a ribbon edge veil like V9999, and dainty jewelry set J2035.

2000s

Young-wedding-couple-enjoying-romantic-moments-outside-000090259655_Medium.jpg

In the past decade, strapless princess-style dresses and dramatic skirts ruled the runways. Fit and flare lace gowns and destination wedding looks became popular. Fingertip veils grew in demand, while unique accessories personalized each bride’s ensemble.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-2000.jpg

Our Top Picks: A beaded edge veil like V7301, sparkly headpiece like 6587, and a beautifully embellished belt like BT030.

2010sbride-and-groom-000047775756_Medium.jpg

Welcome to The Pinterest Bride era! Today, customization is everything. Lace sleeves, creatively embellished backs, and whimsical layers offer brides plenty of options. Designers offer gowns in a range of colors. Beaded patterns, removable overskirts, dress separates, and new laces have taken center stage. Cathedral veils are back.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-2010.jpg

Our Top Picks: A dreamy foldover cathedral veil like V7234, nature-inspired headpiece like 6605, and shoulder jewelry like SH209.

2020s

Wedding-Bride-000026214774_Medium.jpg

What do you think the next decade will bring? A return to the sleek and sparkly styles of the 1920s, a throwback to retro designs from the ‘70s or ‘80s, or something entirely new?

Do you love the outdoors? Are you into sunshine, soft flowers and breezy skirts? Do you adore the idea of a wedding on the beach or in a garden? You might be a bohemian bride!

-TWO-

Wear a nature-inspired headpiece. Floral headbands like 6588 with metallic flowers or 6571 with soft blooms add lavish romance. Designs with vines or leaves such as 6628 and 6634 grace your locks with glittering bohemian glamour.

-THREE-

Carry a messy bouquet. Free-flowing, trailing, cascading, overflowing—anything but a prim and proper bundle of roses. Incorporate local plants, wild flowers, succulents, grasses, or even feathers for true bohemian beauty.
