5 Easy Ways to Make Your Wedding Earth-Friendly

Beautiful-wedding-couple-outside-in-green-forest-000102601137_Medium.jpg

Do you know your ecological footprint?

A wedding involves anywhere from tens to hundreds of people. Think about how much trash you produce in one day, and multiply it by your guest list. Crazy, right?

Good news! You have a golden opportunity to make some earth-friendly choices and minimize the environmental impact of your event. A little planning (which you’re doing anyway) will go a long way!

Here are five really easy ways to keep your celebration clean and green.

Transportation & Venue

Greenhouse gases are emitted by fuel-burning vehicles, so minimize how much carbon dioxide you pump into the atmosphere with smart decisions. If possible, select a venue that is close to friends and family, and organize carpooling options. Choose to have the reception at the same place or near the ceremony location to decrease travel on the big day. Some brides and grooms even hire buses to chauffeur their guests!

bouquet-of-wild-flowers-000086643819_Medium.jpg

Materials & Décor

Most weddings consume a lot of resources. Minimize your impact by using recycled and eco-friendly materials as much as possible. You can design electronic save-the-dates, print your invitations on recycled paper, use biodegradable plates and utensils, choose eco-friendly or used linens, and select seasonal, local flowers. Recycle or repurpose as much as possible afterwards. Re-sell items to other brides, so they don’t have to buy new.

Food & Desserts

Support positive, responsible methods of farming and raising food. Choose local suppliers to support business in your community. Choose vegan to avoid harming animals. If you want meat at your wedding, make sure it is Kosher certified or free range/cage-free. Select organic veggies to avoid pesticides and chemicals. A great way to know your food is legit is by hiring a caterer who specializes in a certain type of cuisine, or by doing it yourself.

Bride-holds-tiny-violet-flower-before-her-palm-000106023639_Medium.jpg

Going Away & Favors

Going away favors can cause a mess. If your venue allows confetti, get a biodegradable variety. If you want bubbles, find some that are non-toxic. Avoid rice, because it can be bad for birds and wildlife. Guests can instead ring bells or wave ribbons. Sparklers cannot be recycled; a good alternative is to use candles, which double as a nice gift for your guests. Other eco-friendly gift ideas include seeds, potted plants, or reusable water bottles.

Wardrobe & Beauty

Gowns made from organic fabrics are becoming more available. If you choose a used dress or wear something borrowed, you’re not only getting good luck, but reducing the number of new items manufactured for your wedding. Select makeup from cruelty-free brands (there will be a bunny on the label or it will say it was not animal-tested). Reduce waste by choosing accessories you already own or will use again.

***Bride-000096290541_Medium.jpg

Whether you make one eco-friendly choice or a dozen, know that your wedding will make a positive difference. And who knows? Your event may even inspire guests to incorporate changes into their daily lives—be it trying a vegan recipe or switching cosmetic brands. Every little bit counts!

10 Ways to Self-Motivate

enjoyment

It’s a new year and time to stick to those resolutions!

If you’re a bride, among your resolutions could be finding the perfect gown, planning regular date nights, or getting in shape for the wedding. Or maybe you’d like to start a business, volunteer in the community, or take on a new project at home.

Whatever your goals, we’re here to help. We’ve collected ten tips for ways to stay motivated and make your dreams happen in 2017!

Stay SMART

Framing a SMART goal is one of the best ways to get started. Though the letters can mean different things for group or personal goals, here’s a review: S is for specific, M for measurable, A for attainable, R for relevant, and T for time-based.

Choose Wisely

Identify your passions and be realistic. If something isn’t that important to you, you probably won’t follow through. Make sure you want this and it’ll make a difference in your life. If you enjoy the journey, it will be easier to remain focused until you reach the destination.

Break It Down

Many people fail to reach their goals because, psychologically, it’s really difficult and scary to do something big. But if you break it down into smaller tasks, suddenly your goal seems much more achievable. Figure out the steps you will take, and determine a reasonable timeline.

Learn New Skills

Could be a reason you haven’t achieved this goal yet is that you may be lacking some of the skills or knowledge you need. Fill in the blanks. Ask people in the field for advice or research it online, and figure out how to do what you’re doing. Get the tools you need to begin.

Be Positive

Negative self-talk is damaging. How can you do well if someone (you) is putting you down all the time? You might think, It’s not that special. Other people have achieved greater. FYI, this is your goal, so compare yourself to you. If you’ve done better than yesterday, that is worth a positive response.

spring-leaves-000084233487_medium

Make Good Habits

When something new becomes part of your daily life, change happens. Since you won’t always feel motivated, commit to a routine. It won’t be easy. You’ll run into excuses; with clever planning, you can figure out how to get around them. Own responsibility for your actions.

Focus on Your Goals

Where does determination come from? When you focus on a goal, there is a driving reason behind it. Brainstorm all the positive reasons that you’re doing this—keep asking why until you discover your ultimate purpose. Draw strength from the deep meaning in what you’re doing.

Reward Yourself

Whenever you need a boost, reward yourself! Even if an achievement is small, it’s still progress. Congratulate yourself in meaningful, enjoyable ways that won’t conflict with your goal. Also, let other people know when you’ve achieved a milestone. A pat on the back is well-deserved support.

Visualize Success

You may get stuck along the way, or even have trouble starting. Ignite your drive by visualizing success. What would your life be like if you were successful? Find pictures online and write in the details of what you particularly want. Find a mentor or example of the success you seek for inspiration.

Rise to Challenges

From outside circumstances to depleted enthusiasm, various challenges may force you to a grinding halt. At these times, be flexible. Give yourself permission to change, but don’t abandon your goal. Identify specific roadblocks and find solutions. Evaluate progress and re-plot your course.

6 New Year’s Resolutions Every Bride Should Keep

young-girl-in-a-white-dress-and-black-hat-000094375129_medium-1

Do you have goals for the New Year? If you’re getting married, you should be making—and keeping—these six resolutions.

Try on Your Dress

Once you have received your gown, you should have a fitting appointment. It’s important to try your dress on before and after alterations to ensure a proper fit. Try it on at home, too—just to make sure the undergarments are comfortable (or at least working) with the dress. Take care that your gown is stored properly before the big day, and ask your MOH or MOB to carry spare pins and/or thread, just in case all that dancing pops a zipper or seam.

Choose Accessories

Have fun choosing a look that goes with your personality and theme! From sparkly hair jewelry to glittering headbands, your accessories complete your look and make the wedding feel like yours. Prep your bridal ensemble with a small case of everything you’ll wear—including shoes, combs, pins, jewelry, the veil, garters, etc. Bring emergency toiletries and extra makeup. Hang your veil 2–3 days ahead so any wrinkles will fall out (do not iron it) and bring a cute shawl or sweater for the evening.

Kiss Often

In the middle of wedding planning, remember that your wedding is essentially a celebration of love. Connect with your fiancé and stay happy—do things to alleviate stress! If planning the wedding puts a strain on your relationship, examine what you could be doing better. Learn how to best communicate, and appreciate each other’s strengths and weaknesses throughout the process. Even if nothing goes as planned, so long as you marry the person you love, everything has worked out fine.

Commit to Wellness

Plenty of brides start a fitness routine or diet to prep for the big day, but how many actually stick with it—or can maintain the results? Wellness is about practicing healthy habits that will keep you physically and mentally fit. Balance your life, do exercise that you’ll enjoy, avoid crash diets, and celebrate your progress. Incorporate positive changes that will make you a happier and healthier person as a whole—so when you walk down the aisle, you’ll be looking and feeling your best.

young-couple-in-love-holding-hands-on-the-sunset-during-000083089983_medium-1

Celebrate Being a Bride

Many people only get married once—if at all. You’re in the wonderful position of knowing that your partner is committing to a lifetime with you. Cherish this time and enjoy being engaged! Celebrate with all the cheesy bridal traditions that you like. Go to parties. Take selfies with your ring. Plan an engagement photo shoot. Talk about your future together. Try on white dresses. Obsess over flowers and all things sparkly! You’re the bride, and this is your moment.

Nurture Your Friendships

What is more important: planning your dream wedding, or laying the foundation for a happy life? We’ve all heard stories of women who are so demanding that even their best friends no longer want to stick around. So if you feel unsupported or stressed, take a deep breath and try a new approach. Be gracious and flexible. Appreciate others. Spend some time with friends without talking about the wedding. This event only lasts a day or weekend; your family and friends are forever.

10 Trending Fall Wedding Ideas You’ll Love

istock_000016635829_medium

Are you planning an autumn wedding?

Get ready to fall in love with these gorgeous, festive ideas for your décor, attire, food, and more! Read on and make your seasonal wedding stand out.

iStock_000002353819_Medium.jpg

Leafy Décor

This is the perfect opportunity for you crafty DIYers out there. Decorate mason jars, hang gilded gold or silver leaves, make confetti, create a wedding arch with bright leaves and flowers, or line your wedding aisle walkway! You can also use leaves as cute place cards, on your invitations, or for your guest book.

Vibrant Flowers

The season’s most abundant flowers include sunflowers, chrysanthemums, carnations, freesias, junipers, roses, marigolds, asters, or dahlias. Pack your bouquet with bright colors, make a floral crown, and feature pumpkins or gourds for centerpieces. Incorporate greenery, lotus pods, feathers, or berries.

Autumn Themes

Fall is ideal for a variety of wedding themes. You can host a rustic or glamping celebration; a laid-back bohemian bash; or a vintage-inspired garden party. A falling in love theme also nicely fits with this season. There’s nothing more magical than an enchanted forest wedding—except for a Halloween-style soirée! If you’d prefer to avoid a specific theme, you can incorporate classic autumnal colors.

iStock_000065510987_Medium.jpg

Pop of Color

Bold colors are the hallmarks of a good autumn wedding. Rich fall hues include marsala, cranberry, plum, emerald, yellow, navy, and orange. Balance them with neutrals like ivory, charcoal, dove grey, brown, and black. Want a splash of sparkle? Copper and gold are the trending metallics. For a more rustic and down-to-earth look, you can use plaid table runners, chair covers, or napkins.

Pumpkins Galore

Would any festive fall wedding be complete without pumpkins? You can write on or carve them for your save-the-dates, make welcome signs, line your aisle, feature them in centerpieces, or use pumpkin place settings. Jack o’ lantern lights are a spooky and fun addition to a Halloween theme. For a fairy-tale celebration, paint pumpkins white or bejewel them with rhinestones.

Golden Lighting

The days in autumn grow shorter. When daylight fades, you can illuminate your reception with lanterns, candles, strung lights, mason jar lanterns, chandeliers (even outside), light-up signs, or jack o’lanterns. Be sure to light up your walkways, the aisle, your dance floor, and tablescapes. It’s worth your time to get this right: beautiful lighting creates a magical ambiance.

iStock_000058770976_Medium.jpg

Signature Drink

Signature cocktails have been a huge hit at weddings the past couple years. Autumnal beverages include spiced rum cider cocktail, apple cider sangria, pumpkin apple shandy, maple-bourbon smash… Mix just about any form of spirits with berries, cinnamon, or pumpkin spice to create something nice! Hot chocolate, pumpkin spiced coffee, or sparkling cider floats are delicious, non-alcoholic options.

Seasonal Dessert

Fall is a great time to serve utterly mouth-watering morsels. Decorate your cake on an autumn or harvest theme, or go with a naked cake covered with berries. If that’s not your thing, you can serve pies or pie pops, candied apples, s’mores, turnovers, autumn brittle, pears, or candied nuts. A full-on candy station filled with your favorite goodies is a fun option, too!

iStock_000061707208_Medium.jpg

Scarves, Jackets, Cover-Ups

Let’s talk comfort. Autumn kicks off the beginning of snuggle weather! For extra warmth, you can provide blankets for your guests after the sun goes down. Keep your bridesmaids warm and dry with plaid jackets or scarves, and be sure to choose a cover-up for yourself, too! Bring an umbrella if there’s a chance it’ll rain (some brides even wear boots if it might be cold).

Enchanting Hair

Now we’re at the best part: your hair. Autumn hairstyles include braids, loose curls, messy buns, and chignons with flowers or leaves tucked in. Fall flower crowns typically feature bold colors and greenery. Another gorgeous option is to wear a sparkling tiara, comb, or garland. For a Halloween wedding, try feathers or black French net. Your veil provides an ethereal finishing touch.
