Something Old, Something New: 5 Items for a Lucky Wedding Day

Bride-getting-ready-on-wedding-day-000061274466_Medium.jpg

Every bride has heard the rhyme. What does it mean to you?

Incorporate symbolic elements into your wedding day by choosing items that are personally meaningful. Read on for ideas about how to make your once-in-a-lifetime moment even more special!

Something Old

The idea behind something old is that your past identity comes with you into the marriage. Many brides play up a vintage theme, wearing heirlooms, old-fashioned accessories, or Art Deco clips and combs. Whether it’s your grandmother’s brooch or a dazzling beaded purse, you can choose an item that works with your wedding style/theme.

Something New

Selecting new, special items just for your wedding is super fun! Your something new represents starting a whole new life with your husband-to-be. Many brides check off this item with their wedding gown (unless they are altering a used dress). Other new bits of pretty can include jewelry, a sparkly headpiece, or fabulous shoes. It’s ok to splurge a little on this one.

Something Borrowed

You’re supposed to borrow something from a happily married woman to ensure that your own union will be lasting and blissful. Wedding shopping can get expensive, anyway, so borrowing a pair of shoes or wearing your mother’s earrings will help ease wallet worry. Just like a gown, an heirloom veil can be passed through the family, featuring in more wonderful wedding memories.

Something Blue

Blue (which, by the way, is one of Pantone’s colors of 2016) is serene and symbolizes fidelity. The most obvious way to incorporate something blue is by dressing your bridesmaids in this lovely hue, but you can use a blue sash, wear blue shoes, show off blue jewelry, or choose a blue garter or petticoat! Create a stylish reception look with a colored wedding outfit like a cute blue tulle skirt and lace top.

Sixpence In Your Shoe

Back in the day, English women would slip a silver sixpence coin inside their shoes to ensure good luck and/or a financially prosperous marriage. More couples are incorporating honeymoon funds into their registries or performing money dances at the reception. After all, why not start off your marriage with a bit of extra cash?

5 Nontraditional Engagement Ideas for Bold Souls

Engagement-ring-with-blue-gem-000084490375_Medium.png

Getting engaged is a milestone. This moment should be captivating and romantic. And these days, a proposal should be personalized.

If the idea of a traditional engagement with rose petals and candles doesn’t suit you (or her), we’ve got a few suggestions that are off the beaten path.

A Unique Ring

This one’s obvious. Departing from a sparkly diamond is a bold move that should only be tried if your partner is absolutely sure she doesn’t want a traditional ring. This article by the Art of Manliness has a wonderful list of alternatives including birthstone rings, Claddagh rings, and artistic metal rings.

The benefit of a non-diamond is that is holds unique meaning for you both, quite apart from the act of getting engaged. It can be a stone that is special to her or an heirloom from your family.

A Conversation

Proposals are getting very showy. Men are hiring professional proposal gurus, photographers, and videographers to capture the big moment. They’re planning surprise parties, scavenger hunts, and vacations to make the whole day/weekend special. They’re going viral.

The elaborate proposal is definitely memorable. But if that’s not your style (or hers), consider having a conversation. More people than you’d think are ditching the hijinks and simply discussing their expectations for the future. The bonus is that you can pick out jewelry together and announce your plans in a way that is mutually acceptable. No need for surprises here.

She Proposes

That’s right, gender equality speaking here. Why should the man decide it’s time to get engaged? While it is traditional for men to propose, that doesn’t mean women have to sit around and wait.

A woman can absolutely propose. In fact, many jewelers offer attractive men’s rings. The risk is that her guy might not be ready for this commitment, if he hasn’t proposed himself. But if the relationship is solid and bucking convention won’t scare him off (mind you, most modern women want a guy who respects their independence), then she can take the plunge. Besides, wouldn’t you enjoy a proposal themed to your interests?

No Rings

People have been proposing with rings since ancient times because the circle symbolizes eternity. Wedding bands are typically worn on the third finger of the left hand, as it was once believed that a vein in that finger led straight to the heart. Rings carry important cultural symbolism—they show everyone that you’re taken—but they’re also a rather cliché, expensive part of getting engaged.

If the gesture matters more to you than the item, consider an alternative to rings. This could be a gift such as a watch or necklace, or something more creative like picking out stars together. If you have practical sensibilities, why not put the money towards a house? And if you’re really sure, you can get tattoos around your fingers (or elsewhere).

Propose with Their Favorite Thing

Who wants a cookie-cutter proposal at a fancy restaurant with a ring dropped in champagne? Very few people born after 1985.

Personalized proposals don’t necessarily mean social media extravaganzas. Dig deep and find out what makes your partner tick. Choose a very special location and include their favorite interest, activity, hobby, or food. Acknowledge your personalities, express your quirky likes and dislikes, and honor all the good times that have made your relationship special.

5 Reasons to Have a Beach Wedding

Jen-Fuj-Bel-Aire-Bridal-Cathedral-Veil

Trying to decide if a beach wedding is right for you? There are wonderful reasons to host an elaborate ceremony in a cathedral or ballroom, and for saying “I do” in a blooming, flower-filled garden. But getting married on the beach has its own special charms!

In honor of summer weddings, here are 5 fabulous reasons why you should pick a coastal venue to exchange your vows.

No Shoes, No Problem

Are you a laid-back bride? Want to steer clear of stiletto heels? If you would rather go barefoot or dance in flip-flops, a beach wedding is perfect for you. This situation is ideal for a casual theme with nautical details like starfish, sand, surf, and shells.

Sunglasses Always Look Cool

Go on, get that photo of everyone wearing sunglasses, looking like they’re straight out of the CIA. You can ditch the formal jackets and ties, and go for an all-out summer theme! If your idea of a good time involves tropical drinks and sunblock, this is a good way to go.

Dare to Bare

Is your dream wedding gown free-flowing rather than structured? Does it lack straps or show a bit more skin than usual? If you’re just itching to ditch the traditional dress with a long train, the beach is your opportunity to show off a more relaxed style. Your guests can come with casual attire, too!Just-married-couple-kissing-on-tropical-beach-at-sunset-000032199840_Medium-(1).jpg

Incredible Veil Photos

Beach weddings give you amazing photos. You can get one with your veil blowing in the coastal wind, and showcase the natural ocean scenery. Rather than skipping accessories, highlight them in beautiful, beachy bridal portraits that will be anything but boring.

Romantic Getaway

If you want to honeymoon on the coast or at a tropical location, a beach wedding just makes sense. You’ll already be at or near your destination, and friends and family can stay longer than just one day! The beach is soothing, romantic, intimate, and absolutely gorgeous. What better place to kick back and start your married life?

8 Essentials for the Destination Bride

bride-and-groom-holding-hands-in-Sperlonga,-Italy-000084160067_Medium.jpg

Happy first day of summer! If you’re going away to elope or hosting a fantastic wedding weekend party, preparation is everything. Make sure you do these eight things to make your dreams come true!

Couple-in-hotel-room-getting-dressed-000054796390_Medium.jpg

Make a List

Ever go on a trip and realize you forgot something important? It’s usually something small, like a hair brush or tampons or your bathing suit—but these things can greatly impact your comfort level.

Create a list of everything you’ll need to pack for the wedding, and double-check. This is not the time to underpack or think “it’ll be fine.” This is your special day! Everything won’t be perfect, but being prepared will get it pretty close.

Beautiful-hair-of-a-bride-000069377419_Medium.jpg

Protect Your Gear

Keep your wedding gown in a garment bag at all times, and hang it away from pets or small children. Safely store your wedding day jewelry, headpiece, garter, undergarments, shoes, and veil. It’s helpful to keep these in a pocket of the garment bag—or in a separate travel box that will keep everything accounted for. Do not iron your veil. To get out wrinkles, you can lightly steam it or hang it for a few days and they will fall out.

A-bride-and-groom-enjoying-the-view-and-the-amazing-sunset-000031865728_Medium.jpg

Have Backups

Accidents happen. If you’ve seen any wedding movie ever, you’ve seen the bride tear her veil, spill wine all over her dress, lose her shoes to the dog, or drop her ring in the shower. Hopefully none of these perils befall you! But if anything does go wrong, it helps to have a backup LWD, hair clip, and pair of flats. You can wear these items on your honeymoon, and you’ll feel better knowing you won’t be walking down the aisle in jeans.

Before-the-trip-000020293584_Medium.jpg

Use a Host

Your wedding day will be a whirlwind of events. It’s difficult to live in the moment and enjoy yourself if guests are constantly asking questions, or if you have to stop and pay the photographer before they leave, or if you have to find out who is double parked. Designate someone else—be it your MOH or wedding planner—to act as the gracious host. Let them solve problems so you can relax and just enjoy being the bride!

candle-lantern-000057919154_Medium.jpg

Emergency Medical Info

Emergencies happen, even at weddings. Whether your fiancé steps on a rattlesnake or your relative falls on the dance floor, you should know who to call. Even if nothing goes wrong on the wedding day, you might require medical help on the honeymoon. Keep your information with you, bring extra medication, and let your insurance companies know that you are traveling. Make sure you are covered abroad.

white-wooden-background-with-shells,-love-letters-and-heart-shape-000076745031_Medium.jpg

Vendors Who Can Be There

Many popular destination wedding spots will suggest (or require) vendors they work with on a regular basis. Make sure you are comfortable with these businesses and plan the details with them ahead of time. Get their contact information. If someone isn’t reliable or doesn’t understand your vision, consider working with someone else. Especially when you’re far from home, it helps to have vendors you can trust to be there.

beautiful--gorgeous-blonde-bride--and-stylish-groom-on-rocks,-on-000089964755_Medium.jpg

Do Paperwork in Advance

Do you both have updated passports? Have you changed your name(s)? Have you purchased a license and hired someone who can perform your wedding? A lot of rules apply to marriage ceremonies, so make sure the two of you can travel and get married in your chosen destination. There may be residency requirements or additional fees. Be prepared so you don’t have to sign at the court house later.

Pick a Style

Destination weddings are fun because they can be so much more intimate and carefree than a traditional wedding ceremony. Smaller weddings are easier to style, too! Transform your bridal look with a destination style—whether it’s glamorous, trendy, romantic, vintage-inspired, or beachy. Choosing a theme will help make your wedding feel just a bit more special and make it stand out from the rest of the celebratory weekend.

Which decade is your favorite? We adored them all, so here’s the scoop on how to style your very own vintage-inspired look!Family-000077062903_Medium.jpg

1910s

At the turn of the century, modest Edwardian gowns and simple rings were in vogue. Think parasols, bustiers, stockings—the whole nine yards! Veils during this era were long and simple, often accompanied by flowered hats or floral garlands.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1910.jpg

Our Top Picks: Style this look with a vintage gown à la Downton Abbey and classic accessories like headpiece 6410, veil V7198, and bracelet BC141.

Victorian-Edwardian-People--Wedding-Couple-000006441263_Medium.jpg

1920s

This decade was all about opulence and fashion-forward sparkle. Thanks to the Gatsby movie a few years back, modern brides inspired by this jazzy era have plenty of options! Geometric designs, beautiful beading, and Art Deco lines create a fabulous ‘20s theme.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1920.jpg

Our Top Picks: Style this look with a jazzy, beaded sheath gown and sparkly accessories. Try on headpiece 6351, a clip like 6405, and a tie veil such as 6354.

1930s

Wedding-from-the-thirties-or-twenties-000002744627_Medium.jpg

Due to the economic crash of the Great Depression, this era featured much more modest wedding attire. Suit sets and blazers came into style, though intricately beaded cap veils were still popular.

Bel-Aire-Bridal-Vintage-1930.jpg
Our Top Picks: Petite bow clip 6607, Chantilly lace cap 6364, and bracelet BC130.

1940s

Wedding-in-1941.jpg
